[edit] Brief Description of Newzbin and Usenet

Newzbin

Newzbin is a service that is dedicated to indexing the ever-changing contents of Usenet, also known as Newsgroups. The reason we do this is to remove the hassle of crawling through the thousands of newsgroups and millions of headers to find what you're looking for, whether that be obscure music, tv shows, games or movies. Think of us as a TV guide, but we're a guide that applies to Usenet. Newzbin also offers many additional features and tools that can save you time, bandwidth, and effort.

Usenet (also known as Newsgroups)

Usenet is a worldwide public service and was created before the World Wide Web. It was, and still is, used for the discussion and sharing of information on any subject imaginable. Any company or ISP that offers Usenet access has at least one news server for their users. These news servers store all the messages in the newsgroups desired by it's users. Periodically these news servers connect to each other and exchange all messages that are missing on either server. In this manner, a message sent by any user would eventually get distributed to every news server that carried that newsgroup.
(poorly paraphrased excerpt from Slyck's Guide to the Newsgroups)

[edit] How Newzbin Works

Newzbin is maintained by thousands of volunteers; any member who uses Newzbin can contribute. Everything you see on Newzbin has been contributed by a member just like you. The users who contribute are known as 'Editors'.
Editors do not post the content to Usenet. It is important you understand this. They cannot and will not help you with reposts, corrupted posts, PAR sets, or in fact, anything. Their only task is to make Newzbin the most comprehensive Usenet index in existance. That's it.

[edit] Things You Should Know

What Newzbin Is NOT:

  • Newzbin is NOT a news server.
  • Newzbin is NOT a warez, crack, serial, FTP, or file-trading site.
  • Newzbin is NOT an IRC search site, nor does it offer files on its IRC network.
  • Newzbin does NOT host any downloads.
The only files that are available to download from Newzbin are NZB (Message-ID) files and censored NFO files. You cannot download the files listed in Reports from Newzbin.

What Newzbin Is:

As mentioned in the brief description, Newzbin indexes the binary side of Usenet. We are a search engine - just like Google! If you are already familiar with Usenet, have a look at our Newzbin Feature Guide to see what features Newzbin offers to Guests, Registered Members, and Premium Members. If you're new to Usenet, or more curious about Newzbin, continue reading into the next section.
