Newzbin:Account Preferences

From Newzbin Documentation

Note, this page describes site preferences found on v3 (and the XXX site).

Contents

[edit] Global Preferences

[edit] Color Theme

Two preferences control the appearance of the site, the color theme and the listing style. A different listing style can specified for Report View Preferences and Usenet View Preferences, but the color theme affects the entire site. To preview a color theme, simply choose one from the dropdown and save your preferences (submit changes) to activate it.

[edit] v2 Mode

v3 introduces many significant enhancements from v2, and with those, a lot of change. People naturally don’t like change, so if you feel more comfortable hiding from it, choose v2 mode. However, in doing so, you’ll be missing out on some of the more powerful capabilities of v3, especially in its search capability. If you see a search feature mentioned on a v3 wiki page, and can’t see it on the site, the chances are that v2 mode is hiding it from you.

[edit] Abbreviate Groups

To conserve space on the report lists, which often include multiple groups, group names can be abbreviated. eg: alt.binaries.multimedia.anime becomes a.b.mm.anime. To see the expanded name, hover your mouse over the abbreviated group name.

[edit] View NFO as

NFOs (iNFOrmation Files) that accompany many reports can be shown as plaintext or in their full glory as PNG images so that any ASCII art contained within is properly rendered. The text versions can look ugly, but you can highlight to copy sections and they are slightly faster to load.

[edit] Use Exclusions

Newzbin offers several methods of automatically excluding certain reports from being included in the result sets. This option allows you to globally enable or disable those exclusions from being active. If you ever see a smaller set of results than expected, you can disable this option temporarily to determine if exclusions are the cause.

For full details about Exclusions, see Newzbin:Exclusions

[edit] Exclude Mode

Defines how multiple-exclusions will interact. See the detailed Newzbin:Exclusions page for information on this. There are two options, All or Any, and the default is Any (for both newsgroups and attributes).

[edit] External Links

Clicking on the web (globe) icon that is available on some reports takes you to an external website that provides more information about the reported item. This option affects how those websites appear in your browser, either on the same page (replacing the newzbin page) or in a new window / tab within your browser.

[edit] NZB Format

There are two methods of choosing which reports to include in a NZB file, the first is to use the checkboxes next to each report in the report summary (shown after selecting a category, or performing a search). This method allows you to select multiple entire posts and download a single file with the message details in it. The other method is to click on a report title to see the detail page, identify those parts of the post you want to include by using the article checkboxes and then downloading a single NZB file. The best choice of NZB format may depend on which method you are using to select reports.

This preference sets the default mode of how the downloadable file will be constructed. The options are:

When using a client that can be configured to organize downloads into separate directories based on the NZB filename, there is an advantage with Zipped Individually if downloading multiple posts. With this choice, you’ll get downloaded files neatly going to seperate directories.

This preference is just a default, so you can always override it by selecting a different method from the dropdowns on the summary & detail pages before downloading a file.

[edit] NZB Prefix

When enabled, add the numeric ReportID to the start of NZB filenames when possible. (does not apply to NZB downloads for files - only reports)

Default: off.

[edit] Popups

Newzbin has a few different inline popups. This preference allows you to dictate when they will appear; when you hover over the trigger; click on the trigger, or never appear at all.

Possible options:

Special notes: If the URL popup is enabled for 'on click', you can still go directly to the Editor-supplied external URL by double-clicking the globe icon.

[edit] Auto-Focus Search

If enabled, automatically give keyboard-focus to the text-entry box in the QuickSearch form (top-right) when the page finishes loading. This lets you search without clicking in the box first.

This is not enabled by default as we've noticed some annoying side-effects; for example, try turning it on, then loading a page and quickly starting to scroll down before it finishes loading. In Opera at least, you will be pulled back up to the top of the page by the focusing function when the page finishes loading. (this is not something we know how to fix yet).

[edit] Retention

This should be set to reflect your NSP’s retention. Retention, measured in days, is the duration that a news service provider keeps articles before discarding them. Setting this incorrectly can result in the site either including reports of posts that are no longer available from your provider, or excluding reports that are still available from your provider. If you have access to multiple NSPs it is advisable to set this to reflect the maximum retention of all of your NSPs. If you still have no idea what this is, check with your NSP or just set it to something reasonable, like 14 days.

[edit] Report View Preferences

These preferences control how the site appears when in Report View mode.

[edit] Listing Style

Listing Style, together with the color theme general preference determines how the site will be presented to you. To discover which one suits you best, try some out by selecting a listing style, saving your preferences (submit changes) and clicking on a category. The difference between Attrs in popup vs Attrs in table is how report attributes are displayed in the summary lists. If you prefer to hide the attributes (until you hover your mouse over the attributes icon) choose one of the Attrs in popup styles. If you would prefer to see attributes embedded in the summary, choose one of the Attrs in table styles. Some listing styles display more information than others, for example, file size and editor.

[edit] Results Per Page

The maximum number of reports that will be displayed per page whilst you are browsing in Reports view mode.

[edit] Mark Seen Reports

Report listings will be marked as seen automatically when you visit the site if this is on. If you would like to manually mark reports as seen instead, turn this option off. Unseen reports are denoted by a gold star, and if the color theme supports it, a different color background.

[edit] Size Between

If you only want to view reports of posts within certain size ranges, you can do so by specifying a minimum and maximum range, measured in MB. You may find it more useful to perform size restrictions on a search-by-search basis, depending on the type of post you are looking for. Reports not falling within the size range will be excluded from the category summaries and search results. This is a default and can be overridden by entering new values into the ‘size between’ boxes on the filtering panel.

[edit] Sort Column

This preference offers a number of choices on how you want the search results or summary lists sorted. This is a default, and can be overridden when using the site by clicking on the small up/down arrows next to each column heading.

[edit] Sort Order

Using the sort column preference, the results can be ordered in a descending or ascending order. Descending is the primary choice: newest to oldest, A-Z etc. Ascending is reversed.

[edit] States

You can choose to only see reports matching certain report states.

[edit] Completion

You can choose to only see reports with one or more completion states.

[edit] Show Language Flags

If selected, the site displays small national flags near the post title denoting the language attribute for the post. Typically, this attribute reflects the written language for texts and the audio language for audio and video media. Some posts contain more than one language, and the site supports this. Also note the English/US flag is never displayed. So for example, a post that is exclusively German and one that contains both German and English language tracks will both appear with just the German flag.

Subtitles on media capable of supporting them do not have any effect on the display of these flags.

[edit] NFOs Required

Selecting this will exclude any report that has no NFO attached. You are advised to leave this off as a global default and switch it on for specific searches as required.

[edit] URLs Required

Selecting this will exclude any report that has no URL attached. You are advised to leave this off as a global report view default and switch it on for specific searches as required.

[edit] Reports w/ Comments Only

Selecting this will exclude any report that has no comments. You are advised to leave this off as a global report view default and switch it on for specific searches as required.

[edit] Usenet View Preferences

These preferences control how the site appears when in Usenet View mode.

[edit] Listing Style

Listing Style, together with the color theme general preference determines how the site will be presented to you. To discover which one suits you best, try some out by selecting a listing style, saving your preferences (submit changes) and performing a usenet view search operation.

[edit] Results Per Page

The maximum number of articles that will be displayed per page whilst you are browsing in Usenet view mode.

[edit] Sort Column

This preference offers a number of choices on how you want the search results or browse lists sorted.

[edit] Assignment (Browse)

You can choose to see only files matching certain file states when browsing.

[edit] Assignment (Search)

As above, you can choose to include only files matching certain file states when generating search results.

[edit] Show Junked Files

If selected, files that have been junked (deemed worthless) by the editors will be included in your search and browse results.

[edit] Privacy

[edit] Accept Emails / PMs

Not yet entirely functional, but may in the future stop Newzbin members sending you messages.

[edit] Anonymous Referring

Turn this on to hide Newzbin as the referrer from external sites. External sites are often linked to in Reports, and some of them are starting to block Newzbin. This option routes your external request via qURL
