Newzbin:Saved Search

[edit] Overview
Saved-Searches are basically a search that can be re-executed with one click whenever you like.
Saved-Searches could be useful if you are looking out for a particular item. In the future, you will be able to ask the new v3 Watchdog to monitor the results of a Saved-Search, and notify you when new items appear in it.
Saved-Searches are even more useful if you are mainly interested in certain types of things, such as Movies in DVD format where the source is a DVD. The title text is left completely blank in the search specification for this and only the attributes are matched.
When creating a Saved-Search, you have to choose an area; Newzbin (reports), Usenet (files), NFOs, or NZBs. A Saved-Search always searches this given area.
[edit] How to create a Saved-Search
You create Saved-Searches in the Advanced Search Form. (access this form by clicking the 'Search' tab right at the top of every page).
Set up your search as you want; searchstring, area to search, category/group/etc, any extra options, anything can be used, as per a normal search.
Right at the bottom you will see 'Save As'. Enter a name, and press Save.
You will be directed to an area of 'My Account', which lists the searches you have saved.
[edit] Editing Saved-Searches
Go to the 'My Account' section of Newzbin (easiest accessed via the tab right at the top of the page. There you will a 'My Searches' link.
In the table in this page you can make a copy of a search, rename one, edit it, or delete it.
- Making a copy of a search is a useful way of replicating similar search options, but subsequently just changing part of it for a slightly different result.
- Editing a search will take you back to the same advanced search form you created the search on. Make your changes, and press Save again.
- Note: changing the name of the search before re-saving it will result in a new search being saved, leaving the old one untouched (like a copy).
- Renaming and Deleting do what you'd expect - Delete has a confirmation dialog on it.
[edit] Using your Saved-Searches
There are a few ways:
- Click the name of the Saved-Search in the 'My Searches' sidepanel on the left (if you have the Saved-Search set to show here, which by default they are)
- Select the Saved-Search in the QuickSearch dropdown (see next section for more info on this) and press Go.
- Edit the Saved-Search, then press Search in the form. This method allows you to tweak the parameters of the search before executing. Unless you press Save first, the tweaks will not be permanent.
[edit] QuickSearch Integration
After creating a Saved-Search, by default it is shown in your 'My Searches' sidepanel (look to the left) and in the QuickSearch form at the top-right of each page. Look in the dropdown-select-box under 'Saved-Search'. If you select your Saved-Search in this box, and press Go, the Saved-Search will be executed.
But wait - it gets better. Notice how in the above example, you did not type anything into the text box in the QuickSearch form. By leaving it empty, the textstring embedded in the Saved-Search is used (if there is one).
So, for example, you might have a Saved-Search that you typed Linux into the textbox. Doing the above method would simply result in a search for Linux.
If you type a string into the QuickSearch textbox before pressing Go when a Saved-Search is selected, the strings will be merged, AND-style. So, type in Debian for example, then press Search. Now it will search for Debian AND Linux, showing you only these results. This leads to very flexible and powerful searching options.
